In 2016, Penzance Cricket Club announced its ten year vision; the core principals of which are 'club, county and community' - this new ethos signalled the birth of a youth cricket academy.
The core objective of our cricket academy is to increase participation for both boys and girls, aged 8 to 18, by providing high quality training delivered by ECB qualified coaches, in a safe and welcoming environment.
January 2016, saw the appointment of a full-time Director of Cricket Development/Head Coach; in the form of ex-first-class cricketer and South Africa U19, Greg Smith.
Greg and his zealous coaching team will oversee the implementation of the club's plan to liaise closely with, and build working partnerships with local schools (including Nancealverne Special School and Penwith College). This will involve working with schools during the school curriculum, to encourage and develop inter-school cricket fixtures, and to aid the migration of the children in to the club environment.
Look ahead, the long-term aim of the Penzance Cricket Academy, is to produce sufficient young talent to enable the club to win the ECB Premier League by 2022, with a team featuring at least 50% of home-grown players.
In 2016, Penzance Cricket Club expects to field Under 11 and Under 13 teams in the Penwith Boys Youth League, and an Under 15 team in the County Girls Youth League. The aim is eventually to field youth teams at Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 age groups, for both boys and girls.
Currently, winter boys' training is held on Monday evenings in Penwith College Sports Hall from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Winter girls' training is also on Monday evenings, in Humphry Davy School from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The first two sessions for newcomers are free of charge, and then £2.00 per session thereafter.
